There is an old saying that 'learning is wasted on the young', however, whilst this may, in some cases at least, be true in the case of the usual school based learning opportunities, it is also very true that we are constantly learning throughout our lives. Both in an academic and in a more practical sense.

This website has chosen to focus on the British educational system and although this does of course vary from country to country, the bare bones of the system is most likely similar to most educational systems through the world.

In the UK our formal educational experience usually starts between the ages of 2 to 4 at nursery or pre-school and progresses from Primary to Secondary, College and University as we get older. In the UK there are two educational systems, the state sector, where choice of school may be more limited but education is free for all (taxes aside!) or the fee paying public / private schooling system. This is choice that every parent must make themselves and is of course probably influenced largely on income. There are also still some grammar schools in England, which are not fee paying, but are selective about the pupils they accept based on academic ability.

There is increasing popularity in a work-based job training approach to learning a career rather than simply going straight of to university after school. With a university education costing the student a great deal of money before they see a return on the investment, the advantage to an apprenticeship is that you can 'earn while you learn'. Apprenticeships operate in many different career sectors as well whether you want to work in business or hospitality!

The internet in also playing its part in educating the nation with the popularity of online courses and even whole educational institutions, such as the Open University, being based online. This has meant that education is probably more accessible now than ever and a lot more people are getting the opportunity to increase their knowledge without having to give up their working lives or way of living.
